Hello Isaac and the day in pictures

Monday, June 1
Our grandson is 2 days old. We have permission from the parents to share that Isaac has arrived. We look forward to getting to know him. Mama Melissa is also doing well.
Our first look from afar: hello, little Isaac!
The "laundry door" handyman swings by the house in the morning. He fixes an auxiliary water pump that hasn't worked for a while and promises to come back Wednesday to cut a door into the wall separating the second floor from the laundry area.

We make appointments for the rest of the week, looking forward to meeting people and reconnecting with friends. We drink water before setting out about 11am. It's hot already; we'd planned to be on our way just after 9 when it's cooler.

David and Paul check in with a nearby language school where they hope to study in a few months. I ask the administrator to check if I can audit the classes. They'll let me know.

Steep path, clambering down through the jungle
We walk down past the neighborhoods lining our hill, through the jungle valley, and back up to Dago. Our friends are fit but we realize how strenuous our walks are: we've acclimated to the heat and steepness.
Poinsettia beauty on our walk
It's my first long walk since a few weeks before we left for Seattle. It's also my first real outing since I got sick so I'm determined to enjoy it. We walk down the motorcycle and pedestrian alleys between houses.
Down we go
In the valley, a stream from a small hydro plant snags neighborhood garbage.
A beautiful scene overlooking the river below
David has come down with something. He gamely wants to join in so he doesn't tell us about his fever and lassitude. He acutely feels the dehydration and heat.

The hydro electric stream shunts back into the river
And then it's the start of our hill climb. This initial part is only 3 or 4 blocks long
but it's straight up. One foot in front of the other ...
Partway up the hill, we pass two women dressed for the cold,
gardening in raised beds. It's 80oF (27oC)

Beautiful colors and stonework ascending the Dago hillside
By the time we get to the top of Dago, Paula is feeling faint. David has all but collapsed with illness. We are very concerned about them both.

"You're almost there!" About 25 meters from the summit of the path.
David and I watch Waldemar and Paula finish the beautiful climb.
We walked from the hill beyond and through the deep valley between.
Paula drinks water and makes it to the nearest restaurant, a British-style place with good food and chilled juice. She eats and feels better.

My face is flushed with a white moustache, the sign of a strenuous effort. In a few minutes, my body cools. It feels so good to have had a decent walk again.

How many chandeliers are good? 9! at the Royal Stag
Stunning floor tiles
David rests and recuperates while we eat
We call a taxi and make it home without incident. David sleeps on the porch daybed for a few hours. the others sit nearby and enjoy the breeze while I crawl into bed for an hour's nap.

We eat IndoMie ramen for supper, some kind of rehydrated sausage and veg with sauce over noodles.  I use a scant 1/2 package of the three cabe (hot pepper) spice packs. Yum. We enjoy the many varieties Indonesian ramen.

When the sun goes down, the prayers spread over the hillsides. The rain hits the roof tiles in a steady drumming.

Moravian Prayer: Eternal God, we stand protected by your presence and your strength. Continue being our armor and giving us heavenly direction. We trust and depend on you. We are not alone. You promise to be with us always.

Merciful God, as we go out into the world there are times when we follow a path leading away from you. Please forgive us our mistakes and guide us as we find our way back to you. In the name of our Savior we pray. Amen.
